사랑하는 스튜어트에게

Saranghaneun Seutyueoteuege

Dear Stewart,

샘 씨 집 식탁, 기억나요?

Saem ssi jip siktak, gieongnayo?

Sam's family's table. Do you remember?

당신은 늘 가운데에 앉았어요.

Dangsineun neul gaundee anjasseoyo.

You always sat in the middle.

모두 한국어로 말했어요.

Modu hangugeoro malhaesseoyo.

Everyone talked in Korean.

당신은 웃었어요. 먹었어요. 말은 안 했어요.

Dangsineun useosseoyo. Meogeosseoyo. Mareun an haesseoyo.

You smiled. You ate. You didn't talk.

↓ then the coach, then Sunhee

You know some Korean words. Nothing comes out.

That has a name. We call it The Freeze.

I'm Stewart. I had it too.

My wife Sara grew up in Spanish.

Her mom speaks no English.

For two years I sat at her mom's table and smiled.

I knew the words. I could not say one of them.

So Sara started writing me letters.

Half English. Half Spanish. She read them out loud, and I said every line back.

Then one day at Walmart, the lady at the register was stuck.

I helped her. In Spanish.

Now we're doing it in Korean.

Sara and I are both learning Korean. From zero.

We've made Sara's letters into Korean for you.

Sam, our teacher, checks the Korean and reads each one out loud.

And now they come to your email, too.

🌶️ And you don't do it alone

Meet Sunhee.

Sunhee is your practice partner.

She asks you the week's saying from Sara's letters.

You answer her out loud.

She opens in your browser, from a link in the email. No app to download.

The letter puts the Korean in your head.

Sunhee gets it out of your mouth.

Your four free weeks

  1. Week 1: The middle seat

Stewart sits in the middle of Sam's family's table. He knows one word: 네 (ne), yes. So the rice keeps coming. Then he learns 배불러요 (baebulleoyo), I'm full.

  2. Week 2: The photo wall

Stewart is always behind the camera. So he is in none of the family photos. Then Sam's mom gets him into one. His face is the funniest one on the wall.

  3. Week 3: The secret stew

Sam's mom makes the best kimchi stew in the neighborhood. Stewart wants to learn it. But first he has to ask her in Korean.

  4. Week 4: The spicy one

Sam's uncle makes a kimchi so hot it hurts. Stewart keeps saying yes to it. Then a mild white kimchi shows up on the table.

Five letters. Then a day to say the week back. Then the saying in four Korean accents.
